For our first feature report Loko magazine were honored  to attend one of the sickest events on the FMX calander – The Unit 2012 Farm Jam!

It was horrible weather in the deep south of New Zealand last weekend, but that did little to dampen the sprits at the Farm Jam.  As always the event was held among the sheep on the Frew family farm at the bottom of the South Island. The freestyle motocross boys managed to get a full round of competition in, despite the strong winds and intermittent rain. Australian Tyrone Gilks took top honors, laying down successive backflips and super stylish dead bodies.  Second place went to Mikael Milero of Spain, with Rhys Hillier finishing third.

The FMX Jam started out tentatively with most riders opting for safety in the wind, but as the competition progressed the 2000-strong crowd got the riders pumped, and witnessed some massive tricks in sketchy conditions including hart attacks, tsunamis and big backflips. The weather really set in after the FMX comp, and sadly the mountainbike and BMX events had to be canned.  Although there was no official competition, the track had dried out enough in the late afternoon for the riders to get out there, and put on a cool show for the crowd. The Frews did a great job getting the venue ready for the fifth Unit Farm Jam and the course looked amazing, so it was disappointing that the weather shortened the event.

The only injury on the day was a broken wrist during the FMX where Brett Heron was blown off line while jumping into the wind! Bring on next years Jam.

The 2012 Unit Farm Jam is not long away! Saturday 25th February will see the Frew Farm on New Zealands south island descended upon by some of the worlds best FMX, mountain bike and BMX riders, for a weekend of hanging out, BBQ’s and throwing down on the bikes.

This is an event like no other – backed by Unit Riders, and set in the rolling South Island hills, on a true rider built course with a great combination of freestyle and big freeride jumps, and a world class line up of mainly Australasian riders, the 2012 Unit Farm Jam is gonna be sick! We will be bringing all the action from the Farm to you as soon as it goes down.

“We are focusing on taking it further and further each year and really excited about developments for 2012. We cant thank UNIT enough for what they are providing towards it. We aim to take it to the next level and make it the premiere Bike jumping event in New Zealand. We are revamping the courses and introducing totally new lines and features. We have new and pre existing sponsors including, UNIT and Red Bull, for this year meaning we can offer cash prizes to top athletes in each category and many spot prizes of gear and product, so it is worth the drive or flight to the deep south to compete for some high level athletes. We have several Australian and USA pro level riders and interest shown from others who may be coming. We aim to get the best riders available down to shred the Farm. ” Dan and Brett Frew.
