Big crowds basking in hot sun watching a hand-picked selection of the best action sports stars on the planet performing in the GAS arena – what more could you ask for on the opening day of the 2013 Festival of Speed? GAS – that’s Goodwood Action Sports for the uninitiated – brings together some of the world’s leading athletes in Freestyle Motocross, BMX Dirt, BMX Flatland, Mountain Bike Trials and Motorcycle Trials on a purpose-built playground crafted from 7,000 tonnes of soil. Throw in a motorsport-mad crowd and the chance to get involved with a programme of Motocross Experiences teaching visitors of all ages to ride and you’ve got a jaw-dropping, mouth-watering, all-round spectacle of two-wheeled wonder.

Kota Kugimura

There were two shows today featuring the likes of US BMX stars Brandon Dosch and Chris Doyle, Japanese FMX rider Kota Kugimura and 12-time World Motorcycle Trials champion Dougie Lampkin. In the opening show it was Kota who won the FMX Best Whip award before Frenchman Jeremy Rouanet pinched his crown in the final show of the day. But the big FMX prize up for grabs every day is the Best Trick title and that went to American Brody Wilson. “It’s great to win the Best Trick again,” says Brody who won the final day’s comp in 2012 “It’s been good today- the weather’s been amazing and the crowd seems a whole lot bigger than it was on the first day in 2012.” In the BMX High Jump comp Guinness World Record holder Kye Forte and Jay Cowley tied for top honours.
