The season will start at the Tips Arena in Linz, Austria with two rounds on the 23rd and 24th of January as the prelude of the Freestyle MX European Championships. In the season opener, rookies will have the chance to ride in an open qualifier to determine who will go on to compete in NIGHT of the JUMPs Linz. The top four riders from Pre-Qualification will then move into the starting field for the European Championship opener.
Directly after Linz, the riders will move next to Switzerland for the opening round of the FIM Freestyle MX World Championships at the St Jakobshalle in Basel. The World Championships have never before started so early in the calendar year. It will be interesting to see how quickly the athletes can return from the winter break and come straight back into riding in championship mode on 29th and 30th of January.
At the end of February, the FMX athletes will again converge on the hometown of NIGHT of the JUMPs in the German Capital of Berlin for rounds 3 and 4 of the FIM World Championship. Inside the Mercedes Benz Arena, viewers can again expect the highest level of Freestyle Motocross competition and in 2016 there will be an additional landing built inside the hall to bring the total to 3 landings and provide the riders with more opportunities to unleash their newest and most technical tricks.
The following week will be the premiere of NIGHT of the JUMPs in the Scandinavian city of Stockholm in the Friends Arena on the 4th of March. It is the first time the World Championships have be in Scandinavia and it will become the 5th round of the series. Following Stockholm, the riders will travel directly on to Krakow in Poland for the next Championship battle for points on the 12th of March.
A six week break will ensue before the return of the Freestyle MX European Championships on April 23rd in Munich, Germany for the 3rd round. The Grand Finale of the NIGHT of the JUMPs European Championship will take place the following month in the SAP Arena in Mannheim on May 21st.
Before the summer break begins, NIGHT of the JUMPs will return for the second year to the FIM Motorsports Capital in Jerez, Spain for a further round of FIM World Championship points. On the 11th of June, Jerez will host the first outdoor event of the season in the bull-fighting ring, before the second outdoor competition is scheduled for the first half of July in Brazil.
After the three-month summer break, the only International Event of the NIGHT of the JUMPs 2016 season will take place on October 8th in Cologne’s Lanxess Arena, where riders will collect points for the NIGHT of the JUMPs World Ranking.
The 9th round of the FIM World Championships will return to Latvia with the probable date of 15th of October in Riga. In addition to Europe and South America, the World Championship will return for the 5th time on the Asian continent. The two NIGHT of the JUMPs rounds will take place in Shenzhen, China in late October or early November. The exact date will be announced later.
The second last round of the FIM Freestyle MX World Championship season will take place in the Eastern European nation of Bulgaria. On November 12th the riders will meet again in Sofia to battle for all important championship points before the final round one week later in Poland. The final round will take place in the Ergo Arena in Gdansk, Poland on November 19th. The last points will be on offer and then the new 2016 FIM Freestyle Motocross World Champion will be crowned. In 2001, the first NIGHT of the JUMPs was held at the Arena in Riesa. Over the following years, NIGHT of the JUMPs has matured to become the most adrenaline fuelled Freestyle Motocross series in World Sport. From a sporting perspective, the NIGHT of the JUMPs is a measure of all things. So the official FIM FMX World Champion will be determined in the context of the series since its inception in 2006. In 2011, the Freestyle MX European Championships were also added, to allow for a European Champion to be crowned. With the World Championship ranking, the series is also the most authoritative ranking in Freestyle Motocross as a sport.
